Introducing Azure VM Hibernation
Hibernation is one of the coolest features we have enjoyed over the past few decades. It allows you to pause your work, put the PC to sleep (hibernation), and then resume whenever you want. It’s like in one of those science fiction we enjoyed. But it’s true, not fiction.
How about we have this hibernation support on our Azure VMs? Then, it will definitely allow us to reduce the cost incurred in our VMs by allowing us to pause and hibernate when the VMs are not in use.
As per Microsoft, Hibernating VMs is an effective cost management feature for scenarios such as:
- Virtual desktops, dev/test — customers can hibernate their machines after business hours and resume their machines the next morning without needing to reopen their apps.
Prewarmed VMs — customers running VMs with apps that have long initialization times due to the memory components, can bring up the apps and hibernate the VMs. Later, these “prewarmed” VMs can be quickly started when needed, with the applications up and running in the desired state.
